Marvel Comics Number 1
The first Marvel comics published in the fall of 1939, with cover art by pulp magazine illustrator Frank R. Paul. It contained a mixture of boys' adventure tales and Super Hero stories including the first appearances of the Human Torch - not the same character from the Fantastic Four - and the Sub-Mariner.

Fire and Water: Human Torch Versus the Sub-Mariner
The very first issue of Marvel Comics (1939) featured two co-stars who were destined to come into conflict with one another as much as they were already in conflict with the world around them.

Closup of Fire and Water Display
Human Torch creator Carl Burgos and Sub-Mariner Creator Bill Everett envisioned a wild conflict when they conceived a crossover between their two serials. In their initial meeting, the Sub-Mariner rampages across New York City while the Torch attempts to stop him. The conflict reaches a crescendo when Namor unleashes a tidal wave that floods Lower Manhattan.

Captain America Comic #1
Jack Kirby and Joe Simon gave publisher Martin Goodman one of the biggest comic book of the 1940s where they invented Captain America. Although American has not yet entered World Ward Two, Simon, Kirby and Goodman already saw Hitler as a grave threat to the principles of democracy and equality. This bold cover powerfully expressed their feelings.

Flo Steinberg
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby worked with many talented collaborators at Marvel - and if you visited the company in the 1960s, "Fabulous" Flo Steinberg was probably the first person you'd meet. As Stan's assistant, she handled his appointment, helped keep artists and writes on a deadline, responded to fan letters, mailed out "Merry Marvel Marching Society" kits, and even dealt with the Comics Code Authority. When she passed away in 2017, she was celebrated as "the heart of Marvel (in the 1960s) and a legend in her own right/"
